How to Buy a Real Registered Driver's License
Over the years, law enforcement has attempted a variety of strategies to fight fake IDs. Holograms, water marks, dual photos and bar-coding have been employed, but all of them can be defeated by sophisticated counterfeiters.
You must have two proofs of New York State residency to obtain a REAL or Enhanced ID. Examples include your current driver's license or non-driver's ID, bank statement or utility bill, or a pay stubs.
Real Documents Unit
The Real Documents Unit processes and renews licenses for people who aren't eligible for the driver's ID card or non-driver identification card due to medical issues. This process involves examining the medical records of an individual and determining if they're safe to drive a car. If not, the license of that person could be suspended or revoked.
A person is said to have a medical condition that limits their driving abilities if the doctor or nurse treating them issues an assessment that indicates they are not able to safely drive or that they do not plan to drive again. The report is then used by the DMV to restrict the driver's license or to suspend or revoke the ability of a driver to drive.
To get a genuine licensed driver's license You must present documents that prove your identity and address. These documents must be valid and current. You can use the utility bill or bank statement to verify your current address. You can also use a duplicate of your Social Security Card to confirm your address and identity. Acceptable is a letter from your doctor saying that you are not able to drive or do not intend to drive.

After your application is completed, you can go to any Secretary State Driver Services facility for your photo and any tests required. After your documents have been verified and reviewed, you will receive a brand new permanent standard ID or DL card by mail within 15 working days.
Real Driver's Licenses
The Real Driver's Licenses is a new form if identification that is in compliance with the federal Real ID Act. The act sets minimum security standards for state issued permits and drivers' licenses and ID cards. Federal agencies like the Transportation Security Administration are prohibited from accepting any card that does not meet those standards. In October 2017, DMV began issuing Real IDs. The IDs appear different than standard driver's licences and include an image of an engraved. People who don't want to obtain a Real ID can still use their current license or an expired one for travel in the United States. If they intend to fly or enter a federal facility they will require another form of government-accepted ID such as passports or military ID. They can also buy a passport from their nearest post office for less than they would pay for a Real ID at the DMV.
If you choose to get an enhanced or Real ID you must go to a DMV to apply. They are not available on the internet, over the telephone, or through mail. You must bring these documents to the local DMV. They are evidence of identity like driver's license, passport or birth certificate; proof of Social Security Number or ineligibility for Social Security Number; proof date of birth; two different documents proving New York state residence. You must also have a current photo.
You can verify the status of your new Real ID or enhanced ID on the DMV website. You can also find out how to renew it if you are required to. It is important to know that a New York enhanced or Real ID will cost more than your standard driver's license. This is because of the extra security features and the appearance. A new law has been introduced to eliminate all transaction costs for those who obtain an enhanced or Real ID ID. However, the law is not yet in force. In the meantime, you must budget in line with your needs. If you travel often, it is worth getting a Real ID or a redesigned ID. This is especially important if you are planning to fly within the United States. You will feel more secure in airports and at your destination due to the additional security features.

After your application has been processed and approved, you will receive an interim paper DL/ID while your permanent REAL ID is being prepared.
